Welcome to the Caribbean gem of Virgin Gorda. Located a few miles east of Tortola, Virgin Gorda is the third largest island in the BVI. Nestled in North Sound, just a stone’s throw south west from Saba Rock, is the beautiful Leverick Bay. Surrounded by tall hillsides and protected by islands and reefs all around, the bay is home to The Leverick Bay Resort and Marina. The resort offers seaside dining, day spa services, swimming pool, beach side entertainment, and more. If you’re ready to dive into water sports the resort offers a wide array of equipment for rent including jet skis, standup paddle boards, and hobiecats. After a day of exploring Virgin Gorda, return for a sumptuous island dinner on the outdoor patio overlooking the sound.
Twelve nautical miles north of Virgin Gorda, the serenity and stunning beauty of Anegada awaits. A visit to this island is always prized. Few get to visit here since it’s north of the Sir Francis Drake Channel and requires a little under a day’s passage. To say that Anegada is far from the crowds is an understatement. Even though the island is the BVI’s second largest by land area, it is the least populated. Ringed by pristine white sand beaches and clear emerald blue waters, Anegada is the only BVI island that is formed from coral and limestone and is not volcanic in origin. Head on over to see the flamingos in the national park, have lunch and stroll along Cow Wreck Beach, and then settle into an evening at Setting Point to enjoy the famous Anegada lobster dinner barbecue.
Welcome to Virgin Gorda, the eastern-most island in the Sir Francis Drake Channel with Anegada a day’s sail to the north. Virgin Gorda might seem to be off the beaten track but you’ll find a wealth of amazing snorkeling, diving, dining, resorts, and of course incredible white sand beaches here. One of most captivating spots on Virgin Gorda is the stunning geological formation known as “The Baths.” This world-famous stop on the south west side of the island is not to be missed. Walk the island trails to a fun hike through, over, under, and around massive three-story boulders. Wade through shallow seawater pools through shafts of sunlight streaming through the rocks. For snorkelers, you’ll want to bring your gear to explore the warm crystal clear waters around the boulders. There’s a load of easy snorkeling entry spots from the beach. When it’s time for a break, the snack bar serves lunch right on the sand. And as the Caribbean sun sets, there are many local dining options just a short taxi ride away – including a stunning world class resort.
Just a few hours’ sail north of Tortola lies the island of Jost Van Dyke. Legend has it that 17th century pirates used the harbors there for hideouts. Jost Van Dyke is home to the world famous Foxy’s beach bar in Great Harbour with live music and barbecues on the beach. Just over the hill nearby is the spectacular White Bay and the Soggy Dollar Bar where you can sample the famous “Painkiller” cocktail and lounge on the pristine white sand beach or wade in the warm crystal clear water. Gaze out south to view Tortola, Thatch Cut, St. John, USVI and the USVI / BVI international border. Around the east side of the island stop at Foxy’s lunch spot and then take a hike to a super fun swim in the bubbly pools.
If you’re approaching from the east the trades will be off the aft quarter, if approaching from the north you’re likely to be on a beam reach. Southwest of Virgin Gorda, Fallen Jerusalem, and Ginger Island is the tiny Cooper Island. Here you’ll find the beautiful Cooper Island Beach Club in Manchioneel Bay with restaurant, great gift boutique, rum bar, solar-powered brewery, coffee shop and bakery. For scuba divers, you’ll meet the dive boat at the beach club’s pier. For kayakers and snorkelers don’t miss Cistern Rock for the colorful reef fish and the potential sighting of sea turtles who live there. Savor the sunset from the beach club deck in the warm Caribbean breeze.
Sailing southwest in the Sir Francis Drake Channel past Salt Island, Dead Chest, and Peter Island, and turning south, Norman Island is dead ahead. Norman is the southernmost island in the BVI chain and is uninhabited (other than by wild goats.) As the legend goes, the caves and hills of Norman Island are the locations where the real pirates of the Caribbean hid their buried treasure four centuries ago. Many believe undiscovered treasure is still buried on the island to this day. Kayak or snorkel the caves at Treasure Point and spot an abundance of small colorful fish at the mouths of the four caves. If beach combing is on the list, head on over to the Pirate’s Bight restaurant or pick up some last minute souvenirs at the boutique. And there’s always the famous and super-fun Willy-T floating bar and restaurant in The Bight serving lunch and dinner.
Welcome to Road Town, the largest settlement on Tortola and the seat of the government of the British Virgin Islands which, under the British flag, is home to the overseas territory Governor appointed by the King. Tortola is the largest island in the BVI and has the largest population today, but its first residents were few, notably Blackbeard and Captain Kidd. For the best beaches, visit the northern side of the island, Cane Garden Bay, Brewers Bay, Long Bay, Lambert Beach and others. For the bustle of Caribbean city life, Road Town has loads of great shopping, restaurants, and night life. The main port at Road Town is a popular destination and a frequent stop for cruise ships and visitors from all over the world.
