Our captain exceeded my expectations with what we were able to see, and where we visited. He was so knowledgeable about the area, the sea life as well as the moorings and anchorages. He was also extremely attentive to everyone’s needs and put together an awesome itinerary. I plan on going back again, and again!

It’s time for the trip of a lifetime. Welcome aboard!
Welcome to the island of Ra’iatea, the second largest of the Society Islands, after Tahiti, in the French Overseas Territory of French Polynesia. Ra’iatea is widely regarded as the center of ancient Polynesia from which expert ocean navigators led the migrations to Hawaii, New Zealand, and other parts of Eastern Polynesia. A coral reef surrounds the island along with the neighboring island of Taha’a which shares the same lagoon. Away from the crowds, enjoy the laid back tranquility of Ra’iatea, the nautical center of Polynesia.
Just north of Ra’iatea lies the island of Taha’a. Serene and unhurried, the island is often referred to as the “Vanilla Island”, accounting for 80% of all vanilla produced in Polynesia. You can also see first hand how the famous black pearls of the South Pacific are harvested at local pearl farms. Taha’a is surrounded by a pristine barrier reef, with smaller islands ringed to the north. Catch the breeze along the shoreline – just like the famous round-the-world sailor, Bernard Moitessier who called the island home. Near the pass to the open ocean is the picturesque Ilot Tautau, home to the 5-star resort, Le Taha’a.
On a thrilling day’s passage north to the island of Bora Bora you’ll experience amazing ocean views few get to see. Bora Bora is a world famous destination known for its aqua resorts and pristine lagoon reflecting an astounding spectrum of blues and turquoise. Motu Toopua is a serene island within the Bora Bora lagoon known for its flagship resort – the Conrad Hilton Bora Bora Nui. Snorkeling with rays is just around the corner as are numerous amazing snorkeling spots and even two-person underwater submarine tours, just minutes away by dinghy. The vista from Toopua is breath-taking – looking southwest there’s 180 degrees of seemingly endless bands of emerald blue water and the barrier reef beyond.
The barrier reef surrounding Bora Bora is formed by the outer edges of a long extinct volcano. The center of the island contains the remnants of that volcano rising in two peaks giving the island its iconic silhouette. From the south lagoon you can choose to connect with tour operators, jump aboard a dive boat to the outer reef and experience the full undersea grandeur of Polynesian sea life, take a panoramic volcano jeep tour, a high speed boat tour, head out for deep sea fishing, visit resorts, and much more. Bora Bora offers every kind of activity for every interest. The south end of the lagoon also hosts the famous Bloody Mary’s Restaurant serving amazing seafood and steak – the perfect venue to savor a south seas sunset.
At the north end of the Bora Bora lagoon, including the main town of Vaitape, you’ll find another world of adventures. Heading ashore, Vaitape has a vibrant shopping area and local fruit markets. You can see a side of Bora Bora few get to see by hoping on a 4WD jeep or ATV tour, even head off road to visit sites such as the lookout point on Mount Popoti with breathtaking panoramic views. There’s also lagoon boat tours, snorkeling, kayaking and much more. And to experience a Bora Bora maritime classic – share some stories over at the Bora Bora Yacht Club at Baie Faatahi. The yacht club has been a haven for round-the-world sailors for over 50 years and offers dining right at the water’s edge with a sunset not to be missed.
Experience a one-of-a-kind opportunity on the south seas sailing your passage south to Taha’a. Departing from Bora Bora, you’ll head out through Passe Teavanui, around the barrier reef and catch the trades to head south-east. With Taha’a and Ra’iatea ahead in the distance, you’ll sail across the passage to enter the Taha’a lagoon via Passe Paipai. Heading south and east you’ll round the southern coast of Taha’a and make your way up the eastern lagoon to Baie Ha’amene. Here the famous Hibiscus Restaurant serves a celebratory Polynesian feast with a fun island ambiance nestled beneath lush mountains.
At Passe Toahotu on the east side of Taha’a lies Ile Mahaea – a destination of stunning natural beauty. Like literally stepping into a photo – Ile Mahaea is a sight that must be seen to be believed. The island is private, exclusive, and remote – saying it’s far from the crowds is an understatement. Relax on the white sand beach, swim in the calm crystal clear waters, or snorkel the huge reef teeming with tropical fish just feet from shore. However you enjoy the day on Ile Mahaea, you’ll find it a truly special south seas experience.
Uturoa is the northernmost point on the island of Ra’iatea and features views of Bora Bora, Taha’a and Huahine. The first settlers of Uturoa were early Polynesians from Southeast Asia. Both Captain James Cook and Charles Darwin visited Uturoa during their travels through the Pacific. Today, the seat of government for this area is located here, as is the single runway of the Ra’iatea Airport, and numerous hotels, restaurants, and shops. There are terrific views of the neighboring islands from Mount Tapioi, and don’t miss the volcanic black sand beaches nearby.
